About

The Location

Kilcowera Station is owned and operated by Peter and Hillary Davies.  Peter grew up with an interest in the Outback, visiting family on farms around Griffith and Armidale.  Peter and Hillary lived in Alice Springs where Peter worked with Aboriginal communities of the Northern Territory, and they developed a love for the colours, the stillness, and serenity of the country, and the resilience of the people who live there. During 2020, when most of life's activities seemed to be cancelled from COVID, Peter and Hillary took to the air in search for the perfect property, which they discovered in Kilcowera.

There are a large variety of accommodation options to suit the needs of all visitors to Kilcowera, and ensure that each stay is a relaxing and refreshing one. There are a variety of rooms available in the Shearer's Quarter's for visitors seeking a more comfortable stay.

For visitors who prefer to camp, there are several options available. These range from the comfortable powered lawn camping sites for visitors seeking a relaxing and low intensity stay, to the true outback wilderness camping for visitors seeking a slice of outback adventure. Access to certain facilities depends on the camping options guests would like to choose from.

Getting There

Kilcowera is located deep in the Australian Outback, in South West Queensland. Located in the Bullo River Shire, our station is far from everywhere. This makes it the perfect escape for travellers seeking an adventurous retreat.

Most of our guests arrive by car. You can approach in two ways.

The NORTH approach is via Thargomindah. The driveway to Kilcowera Station is located 76 km south of Thargomindah on the new Hungerford Road. It is mostly dirt road that is well maintained.

The SOUTH approach is via Hungerford, on the Qld NSW border. This approach is 92 km of dirt road. It is most susceptible to road closure.

Before you come, please check the current status of roads with the Paroo Shire Council web page found here. You can also ring the police station at Hungerford or Thargomindah to check the most current situation. Sometimes there is a "flood truck" that carries cars across flooded sections.

PLEASE NOTE:  When using Google maps, navigate to "Kilcowera entrance" or "Kilcowera access".  When approaching from the North (from Thargomindah) or South (from Hungerford), keep driving along Hungerford Road until you see the signs for Kilcowera Station. Sometimes navigation maps take travellers through our neighbour's property, along a private road, with no signage.

 Powered/Unpowered Lawn Sites

  • Powered or Unpowered sites for tents, campers, motorhomes or caravans on the Shearer's Quarters lawn.
  • Access to the Shearer's Quarters Camp Kitchen and Fire Pit.
  • Access to Shearer's Quarters bathroom and shower facilities.

Unpowered Lagoon Sites

  • The spectacular Cardenyabba Lagoon is one of the highlights of Kilcowera. There are a dozen waterfront campsites right along its 5km bank, providing visitors with a private and secluded stay.
  • Sites for tents, campers motorhomes or caravans.
  • 5 min drive from toilets and laundry facilities at Shearer's Quarters.

Outback Wilderness Camping

For the true adventure travellers. Sometimes the conditions on the station are conducive to allowing guests to explore some of the "hard-to-reach" places for wilderness camping. We have approximately 40 waterholes, many of which are "secretly known" to only a few. Requires full safety gear and provisions, and can be discussed with the managers a few days before your arrival.

Extra charges apply, and a rescue plan is required.

A beautiful property. Judged by many to be the best of the various Stations visited by 4WD tours, and those seeking an outback experience, and bird watching. Under new management.
