About

The Location

Nathalia is an easy drive, just 22.9 kilometres, from Numurkah and 42.4 kilometres from Shepparton, in the centre of the Goulburn Valley. The road weary traveller will find it a lovely, peaceful, creek-side picnic spot, enticing you to take a short break to relax and rejuvenate. Settlement dates from the 1840s with the land used for grazing and farming. Saw-milling began in the 1860s and further growth was minimal until the railway was constructed in the 1880s, enabling several new townships to be formed along the line. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, aided by the construction of public housing. Today the land is used mainly for dairy farming, grazing and crop farming. The population of Nathalia is currently over 1,400. Over 50,000 people form the broader economic region including Moria Shire, Berrigan Shire and Campaspe Shire. Nathalia is charming and offers key services with a great sense of community.

Those visiting Nathalia can find short-term parking at Weir St, between the old toilet block & the fire station. Stays are limited to 24 hours and visitors will have access to toilet facilities, and BBQ facilities. Mobile coverage is available in the area, and pets on a lead are permitted.

Nathalia is another great base to explore the Moira Shire region from and is known as the gateway to the town of Barmah on the Murray River. The Barmah Forest National Park (21,600ha) is only 25 kilometres from Nathalia and is home to the world’s largest stand of river red gums, dating back well over 500 years and reaching heights of over 45 metres. The forest is on a major migratory flight path for birds and the environment supports 219 species plus numerous mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Visitors can take a 60 kilometre (2 hour) self-drive tour to historical sites including the muster yard, punt paddock, lagoon, Cornalla Landing and green engine.
