About

The Location

Located in and around Maldon township, the Maldon Historic Reserve protects many relics of the gold mining era - abandoned shafts and tunnels, mullock heaps, quartz roasting kilns, stone walls, chimneys and machinery - as well as the box and ironbark forests once threatened by the constant demand for timber to feed steam boilers and shore up mine tunnels.

Definitely, have a look around while you're here. Why not climb up the landmark fire tower, for an amazing view as well.

Camping is available at Butts Reserve. No bookings, no fees.  2WD access via sealed road.

Campsites: Located in a bush setting close to Maldon. Suitable for tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. All areas are unpowered.

Facilities: Toilet, tables and seats, wood-fired barbecue.

Water: No drinking water supplied.

Campfire: Campfires are permitted.

Rubbish: There is no rubbish collection at this campground, please take all rubbish with you.

Dogs: Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash at all time.

I give it three star because of a number of permanent residents who spoil the atmosphere of a Park where you visit to enjoy nature. Many of them have generators. They also occupy some of the best spots. And generally speaking, they are not there for the "views" or to soak the atmosphere. Although it is supplied, bring your own toilet paper ! The same goes for the public toilets in Maldon as it is cigarette paper thin !

Large State Forest Park camp on the edge of Maldon. Roads have been graded and gravel laid. Many places to set up. Signs warn of the danger of falling trees limbs. Toilets are clean with plenty of paper. No bins so take out all rubbish. Marginal phone reception for Vodaphone & Optus. A pleasant place to stay.

Nice spot a bit restrictive for Big Rigs, but there is a large area on the right near the old shelter to pull up and do a look around.
