The Location

The abandoned Mary Kathleen township allows free camping in the "ruins of the old township".  Basically, you will see streets and slabs, footings where the old buildings used to stand.  Plenty of shade but no facilities available.  Please take all rubbish with you.  Great spot but beware of bridge wash outs and potholes.  The township is approx 5km's in from the highway.  The town's GPS at the main roundabout is -20.774607, 139.980406 and you can spread out in multiple directions from there.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The road in to the township is an easy drive on gravel and bitumen. There are some potholes. We suggest downloading a town map first as we enjoyed walking around identifying the various building sites. There are plenty of cement areas to camp on. We are very lucky to have access to this on private land so ensure you take all rubbish with you. We unhooked and drove to the mine site - this road is a little rougher but can be driven by 2WD - it is worth going up for a look. As far as I can find there is no map for the mine site area. You need to be self contained.

I stayed here 23 Aug 2016 all what is described above quiet spot off the highway, plenty of concrete slabs to choose from over a large area, phone and internet reception good, satellite tv. Old ruins to explore and if you know where to go original mine site to see, but be mindful it is on private property, so do the right thing and we will get to keep a great free camp.

We have stayed here several times - a great spot with plenty of room. As previous comments lots of cement slabs to camp on with lots of shade. Really worth a stay and a look around with a downloaded map. Worth a drive up to the mine site - road a little rougher but take it easy and you will make it. There are 2 sides to the camp area one I would call the residential area and over the gully the town centre - joined by a walkway and also a road.

Great camping on private property. Lots of vehicles coming in for a look and several stay here. Here for two nights even had a camel walk past this morning. Took the mine road first but wouldn’t recommend it unless you have 4x4 quite rough in places. Road int to town site from highway has some potholes but not to bad.
