Wongai Camping Area - Cape Melville National Park

The roads and camping areas within Cape Melville National Park (CYPAL) are not suitable for trailers, caravans, campervans or buses. Access to camping areas involves four-wheel driving in soft sand, as well as tidal creek crossings. Stay on designated roads and formed tracks—do not drive on salt flats. Extensive vehicle recovery equipment is essential. Travelling with another vehicle is highly recommended.

Location: by the beach at Bathurst Bay between Nookai day-use area and Oystercatcher camping area. The camping area begins 43 km from Wakooka outstation (39 km from the park boundary).

Access: by high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle only—it is not accessible for trailers, caravans, campervans or buses. Access involves four-wheel driving in sand, a freshwater creek crossing and a tidal creek crossing.

Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car.

Camp site surface: sand.

Facilities: none.

Open fires: allowed (except when fire bans apply). Fuel stoves are recommended. Do not collect firewood in the park.

Generator use: generators that operate at a noise level less than 65 dB(A) when measured at 7 m from the generator are permitted.

Essentials to bring: adequate food and drinking water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, mosquito nets, fuel stove and adequate fuel, spare parts for your vehicle and recovery equipment.
